Planta herbácea de la familia de las brasicáceas, muy ramificada y amarga, alcanza hasta los 4 m de altura. Las hojas son oblongas o lanceoladas, espatuladas y agudas con 2-4 dientes en cada lado. Las flores son de color blanco o lila y se agrupan en un corimbo laxo alargado. El fruto es una silicua o vaina redonda.

Tradicionalmente, se ha usado esta hierba en el tratamiento de artritis, gota, corazón agrandado, y asma. Hoy día la iberis amara se usa ampliamente en Alemania para el tratamiento de dispesia. Además de la dispepsia, las combinaciones de iberis amara con otras hierbas han mostrado su eficacia al reducir los efectos secundarios gastrointestinales causados por una variedad de medicamentos y para reducir los síntomas del tracto digestivo en el síndrome del intestino irritable.
