Piperazine [ Comments ] [ Indications ] [ Product Information ] Indications: •ascariasis •enterobiasis Comments: Description: Piperazine is an oral anthelmintic agent. It is used to treat roundworm and pinworm infections. Piperazine blocks the response of the Ascaris muscle to acetylcholine, causing flaccid paralysis of the worm. Take on an empty stomach. This drug was approved by the FDA in 1953. Contraindications/Precautions: Renal impairment, hepatic impairment, seizures. Drug Interactions: No significant interactions. Adverse Reactions: Nausea/vomiting, abdominal cramps, headache, dizziness, vertigo, ataxia, seizures, cataracts, blurred vision. Dosage: For treatment of ascariasis: Adults: 3.5 g PO per day for 2 days. Repeat in 1 week for advanced cases or if there is evidence of persistent infection. Children: 75 mg/kg PO (up to 3.5 g/day) for 2 days. Repeat in 1 week for advanced cases or if there is evidence of persistent infection. For treatment of enterobiasis: Adults and children: 65 mg/kg PO per day (up to 2.5 g/day) for 7 consecutive days. Patients with renal impairment: No dosage adjustment needed.
